W126: engine shocks question

Have an '88 420 SEL with 170K.

Recently, I had engine mounts replaced on both sides - as one appeared crushed.

However, I did not replace the engine shocks at the time.

I still feel some pronounced left to right movement of car upon starting up, but only for the 1st 1-2 seconds of initial start-up/cranking.

What exactly do the engine shocks do? And should I have them replaced?

Thanks.

Robert,

I just had my engine shocks replaced on my W126 2 weeks ago, and it does make a considerable difference. The old shocks were all shot and had no dampening effect at all. There used to be a substantial amt of vibration transmitted from the engine to the chassis, especially during idling. After replacing the shocks, the car has become much smoother.

I'm very happy with the results for that amt of money spent. Remember to get the engine shock mounting bushings together with the shocks as well. The rubber bushings would be dried up and distorted and in need of replacement.

Matt,

The shocks cost me S$17 each (approx. USD$31.45) and the mounting bushings are S$9 each (approx. USD$16.65). You'll need two of each.

Part number for the shock: 123-240-1048
Part number for the bushing: 123-240-2518

These part numbers are for my 280SEL (W126), dunno if their the same for your cars.

Thanks Mervyn, I would imagine that they are different however I would think the prices wouldn't be too far off.

Cheers
Matt.
