want to get rid of a rattle

My 95 S320 has a rattle in the steering wheel when it's being driven on a gravel road or a rough highway. if I just touch the top left hand part of the airbag, the rattle goes away. Is there a screw that needs tightening there to stop that rattle, or something on the inside to tighten or add a small piece or cloth to?? Or to get rid of that, will I need a new airbag??

I believe you have two mounting screws for your air bag. They are accessed thru two holes on the back side of the steering wheel spokes. On my car the screws are torx (t30). A 2.5" torx bit is inserted into the holes to tighten the screws. I don't know if MB used torx in '95. It's sounds like one or both screws are loose. If you don't have tools, any mechanic should be able to tighten them for you.

looks like I will have to get me a different torx set. I have the short ones...

It doesn't seem to be a T30... Will buy a full set in the next few days with long and short bits, and let know the size. I seem to have lost most of my other set...
Gremlins, I tell you... Gremlins keep stealing my tools... :D

You might try a Philips #2 screw driver if it's not torx.

It's a T27. Tightening the screws did not get rid of the rattle. Can I remove the airbag from the steering column without disconnecting the battery, etc, so I can find whatever is loose and tighten it, or will I have to go through all the disconnect steps including lifting up the floor pads, etc...

Glad you found the right size tool. I always disconnect the battery when working on electronics. And the air bag IS an explosive device.

After loosening the two torx screws, lift the air bag up and disconnect the connector. Store the air bag face up. I've been told not to turn on the key with the air bag disconnected as this will cause a code that can only be cleared at the dealer.

If you can't find the source of the rattle at that point you may need to remove the steering wheel. The mounting bolt (10mm hex ?) can be very hard to remove since most are put on with thread locker. I had to heat mine with a butane torch to get it free. [Not for the faint of heart.]

Hope that helps some. Good luck.
