Diff Oil change
Thanks everyone, just changed the tranny fluid on 1998 E320 with help from this forum. Now I wish to chagne the diff fluid. Anything special here like a friction modifier???

Put in good oil
There are good synthethic brands out there and they do a wonderful job. Make sure both plugs will turn out before dumping what you have.

Spec is MB Hypoid Gear Oil 85W-90 (Part No. A001989170310) but I used Mobil 1 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube.
Ditto on making sure you can get the fill plug out before draining. |
Friction modifier is only for Limited Slip differentials.
I used Mobil 1 75w-90 in mine. |
+1 on the Mobile 1.
Also, some of the write ups you will see use orings on the plugs. Yours are plain pipe plugs, so no materials are needed other than the oil. I also use a short length of tubing. The hot setup might be to use 2-3 ft of tubing and have a helper stand next to the rear tire and squeeze the bottle while you stick the tube in the diff and monitor for full... |
Use teflon tape on the plugs to make service easier the next time.
