Shop says I need a new Gas tank. Acid no good?
 

So my fuel pumps got clogged up again and maybe burned out (great). This time I actually took my tank out and was going to replace the screen filter and the hose. I drain the gas I put in there about two hours prior, and it comes out yellow and a LOT of black and orangish flakes everywhere.

So I took the tank to a radiator shop to get washed or acid washed? The guy said I just need a new tank cause if he washes it with acid it will burn through the aluminum. Should I go with his advice and buy a new tank or is there some other liquid out there that can beat the crap out of the junk inside that tank? I'm torn between if he's being honest or trying to make a quick buck off me? :(

JCDW124..............Exactly what w124 do You have ? I ask because if You conclude that You do in fact need a new tank; I am parting out a 1994 E320 and would offer the tank from it for a fair price. If interested i can find the part number on it to insure fitment and may be willing to meet You "HalfWay" for delivery somewhere between your Palm Springs and me in Las Vegas...... Hey Kevin, I have a 90' W124, 3.0L M103. If it makes any difference I have the series 2 interior (I think that's what it's called?). Is the tank clean inside? I might also be interested in some other stuff aswell. =)

Any thoughts on sulfuric acid? I randomly found some in our garage and thought about asking here first before I do anything stupid. :(

Get a good used tank from a fresh re-cycled car!

I had the tank from a motorhome steam-cleaned at a truck service center, that should work.

If I had already trashed a new fuel pump, I'd definitely go ahead and replace the tank with a known good tank. Wouldn't it just totally suck to go to all the effort of steam cleaning the tank and putting it back in only to fug up yet another fuel pump and having to repeat the whole process?

I'm fairly certain it's a steel tank, not aluminum, hence the rust.
