M103 - W124 engine swap
Just trying to get an estimate for my engine swap.
1. How long would it take to pull an M103 out of a W124? 2. How long would it take to install a M103 into a W124? Thanks, HS |
Well I can tell you it takes ~3-4hours to get the transmission ready to pull out done at a comfortable to slow pace. Even if you take it all out as one unit, still expect the same time minus 15minutes not having to reach the top engine->tranny bolt ;)

Did mine in a day
I have an 86 W124 with the M103 and 5 speed. The five speed might be just a bit easier in and out then the automatic, but not by much. I started early on Saturday AM and got everything loose and tagged. Bajaman came over at about 11;00. We hooked up the engine lift, (a good one with the adjustable hookup) Had it out by 1PM, had to switch transmission and flywheel to 89 M103 - couldn't get the pilot bearing out and had to run and get a tool to do that, got it all together and got it in and mounted on mounts, hooked up exhaust and hooked up drive line and called it quits in the early evening. Next day it took a while to sort out the wiring and connectors, hook up fuel lines, reinstall fan and front pulley assembly, yes there was plenty for an old guy like me to spend time on, more then I wanted to do in one day. But just pulling it and changing the transmission and reinstalling the engine can well be done in one day. It is the finishing that takes time.

Thanks for the replies. Gives me an ideas as to what to budget for time.
