Does anyone know the weight of stock 15 hole 190E wheel
I've decided to upgrade my wheels and tires. Knowing that weight is critical as far as performance is concered, I want to know the weight of my stock wheels for comparative purposes. My wheels are stock 190E 15" 15 hole- don't know the width but it has P185x65Rx15 tires. I first decided I'd get 17" AMG Replicas but they weigh about ?? I'm told by the seller that the 16" are about 25#. Geez the 17# must weigh a ton. Seems like the only site selling aftermarket wheels that list weights is Tire Rack. Anyway I'm going 16". I think if the one's I"m considering (ASA 8 hole @ 21.2# from Tire Rack) are not a too much heaver than my stocks othewise I'll just refurbish mine or go with 15". But that doesn't seem like enough of a differance appearance wise

So...21.2# minus 16.6#=4.7#X4= 18.8 lbs unsprung rotating weight for 4 wheels. This is going from stock 15" wheel to 16" ASA 8 hole. Seems like a lot to me. I was told that 5lbs unsprung weight= equivalent 80lbs. in the car. If true, that that's like 300 lbs in the car. Also told each pound unsprung weight consumes 2hp. If true, thats 37.6 hp. I'd feel that. My 190E 2.6 has 158 hp. Does anyone have real world experience with this theoretical drain on performance. I'm discouraged @ this point. Maybe go with 15". Not too cool looking.

When I raced my 16V 190E...I tried 4-5 different wheels weighing as low as 11 lbs each.
I used W202 C-class wheels most of the time. There was barely a tenth of a second to be gained on a 1minute 45second lap. However I ended up with a lot bent rims & deemed the light weight wheels worthless. |
The ASA AR1 wheels are 16 x 7's and weigh 18.8 lbs...they are a Korean BBS knock off, actually made under licence to BBS. I have had them now for four years on my 16V and used them on our wondefull PA pot hole filled roads. I am running 205 45 16's on a lowered sport suspension with limited travel...no collapsed or dinged rims...and I have hit some doozies. The finish needs some dressing, but other than that, they have stood up fine (better than the oem BBS wheels I see on BMW's in the same shop I use).
The last aftermarket wheels I had, got destroyed on the same roads in less than 16 months. On these ASA wheels, the heavily offset center hubs anchor the rim closer to the center of the wheel than many other wheels..so they lend more support to the inside of the rims...maybe why they have stood up so well. |
