When did Mbs start using codes ?

The US car companies started using scanners and developing control boxes that could be scanned for malfunction codes in 1983 (I think). When MB start using them?

Before?

After?

I'm taking strictly gasoline engines.

I'm trying to figure out if it makes sense to look for any kind of computer scanner for an 83 380SL. This is my only gasser Benz.

no computer scanner on a 1983 380SL.

My impression is that it was later than '83. My 1988 Cal version W124 had the 8-pin diagnostic box with codes for about 5 conditions. I don't think that was even present on the 1987s yet. A professional M-B tech may be able to pin this down.

1988 was the first year a MB in the USA could be scanned thru a diagnostic connector.

VERY simple analog code system.

GM began development in 1974, and production in 1980.
The system was called C3 or Computer Command Control System.

Have a great day.
