w126 wiper linkage
 

What is involved in changing the wiper linkage on a W126 (300SD) one arm does not move, and it is attached. So it has to be a linkage thing.

Not sure how one side can not work if it is attached, it's all mechanical. I assume the passenger side doesn't move? The motor drives the drivers side and the passengers side is just mechanically linked to the left side. If one side works it is the drivers sise as that's what the motor drives. Then the link makes the right side work, but the link usually has come off. dID YOU CHECK TO SEE IF THE NUTS THAT HOLD THE ARMS DOWN ARE BOTH TIGHT? (sorry the cap lock stuck)
Have to remove the whole wiper assembly, then transfer the old motor to the new linkage and reinstall. A bunch of stuff at the base of the windshiled, all that air intake stuff, has to come off and not sure but the heater blower motor might be coming off, too.

Passengers side works fine. Drivers does not. But is tight and seated properly.

Are you sure the arm itself is tight on the shaft on that side and is not stripped out inside where the splines are....

yes it is tight. And when you move the wiper up by hand, the shaft is turning. So I have to go in there, and have no idea where to start..

The thing is, is thatthe motor powers the drivers side, that's where the motor is, so it would still seem more likely that the wiper nut isn't tight. If I'm wrong it would be interesting to see the failure. But I haven't had a wiper mechanism like this in front of me for a long time so I might be forgetting something.
Anyways, I looked up the operation, you need to get the plastic vent/intake panels off, which should just be a bunch of phillips screws (you might need to pull off some of the weatherstrip or trim strips to get to some of the screws, not too hard at all). Then there are a couple nuts that hold the mechanism to the firewall, and one at the base of the wiper motor. The connector you will see near the wiper motor, sort of behind the vacuum booster for the power brakes. Not hard, nothing needs to be done to the blower motor like I thought, it's the other way around; if you need to get the BLOWER motor out, then the wiper mechanism comes out, not the other way a round.
