Noise from steering - 420 SEL

I searched this subject at length. Several people posted that the moaning and groaning from the steering column was caused by bad lower ball joints. Not in my case. Yes, the ball joints left a lot to be desired... but the moaning and groaning is still there...

Anyone else have a better idea of the source of that noise?

could be idler arm bushing 1st off . sencond check upper ball joints you got to replace the whole arm though,,juck car uo under jacing plug , so tire is hanging down not touching the ground get i long pry bar and put btwen the front sway bar and the lower part of the inner control arm bushing and pry downward to see if you got any slack.
hope you find the problem make sure all tie rods have no ripped boots and noslack either , chech you thrust rod bushings too.

Thanks partsman225; I have replaced the two tie rods, the steering damper, the upper control arms (complete, including the upper ball joint on the steering knuckle), the braking control bearings/ball joints, I've checked the idler arm bushings but they're tight. There just doesn't seem anything else I can change on the front suspension and steering. It's all new now.

What are the thrust rod bushings?

The moaning/groaning as I turn the steering wheel persists.

Air in your power steering or low PS fluid . Turn wheel full left lock race engine and see if it bubbles. Turn lock to lock and see if fluid level goes down.

I just saw my Indy replace a leaking PS reservoir gasket and hose and it made those sounds upon refill till he got the air out

Thanks for the post.

No bubbles.
Lock to lock - level remained the same.
Still groaning...
