1967 250S (W108) 4 Speed Trans Manual
Hello, I just recently purchased a '67 250S w/ 4 speed on the column and noticed that it revs kind of high once I get into the fouth gear (at around 45mph). Is it me? or does it seem like there should have been a fifth gear? Any comments are most welcome. Thanks. Matt

Compared to modern, more powerful cars equipped with an overdrive top gear, your 250S is going to seem a bit revvy at highway speeds. In order to get any kind of takeoff performance from a 2.5 liter engine in such a heavy car, overall gearing is lower than in most new cars.
I assume that your car is sound (clutch is not slipping). Try this link re: 250S performance parameters. When healthy, this is a 180kph/110mph car. www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Pines/6633/w108w109/ |
That car came with a 3.92/1 rear axle ratio! That is what I use for racing. LOT of bottom end power, but no TOP end speed w/o a bunch of RPM!

I have to assume that a 250S 4-speed is pulling 3250-3500 RPM at 60MPH in 4th gear. This compares to the average big-6 American sedan which might see 2,000 RPM in overdrive 4th at that speed.
