94 Sl320 I can not recover fault codes

I have a 94 Sl320 with the check engine light on . I have tried with a home made tester to recover the codes . ( tester works on friends car)
I get one very fast flash then nothing , light will not reset . Is there somthing that could be burned out ? Car drives fine .

IIRC the SL uses a completely different engine code system that is not compatible with the homemade tester.
