$800 for a front license plate bracket?

When I bought my 1999 E300 TD it didn't have a front license plate bracket. I didn't realize this unitl the CT plates came in the mail (n=2). CT law requires front and rear plates. I was getting serviced last week and asked to have one installed. The dealer said they don't carry them in stock and that they were $800 a piece! I just checked Parts shop as a back-up and couldn't find them listed. Any one else experience this?

Do you REALLY need a plate in front?

I run impact strip filler plates on all 3 of my MBZs here in CT, and have not ever had a problem. FWIW

I have had to make do with "retrofits" in many vehicles I've owned, including a couple of trips to the hardware store, whenever the factory alternative got too pricey. But $800? The whole impact strip doesn't cost that much!!!

When I brought my C280 from Texas to California in 99, a local dealer installed the front license plate bracket for me free of charge. The service included the bracket, drilling some holes, and installation. I think your dealer is greedy and think everybody who drives a Mercedes is an idiot.

210 885 02 81 License palte moulding was 95.00 on my 12/99 price tape , I would call another dealer and see if that dealer is trying to shaft you

Yeah, yeah, yeah . . .

Here in California, front plates are required also. There's no waaaaay I'm gonna mess up the look of my vehicle with a front plate/frame. I don't even run a rear plate. What I do do (putting those two do's together always crack me up :) ) is this: I keep my plates in the car along with a screwdriver. If I ever get stopped (haven't yet -- fingers crossed), my story is that I took photos a couple days ago and didn't want my plates in them for security reasons (I'm placing them in a "classified ad" ;) ). "But officer, I can put them on now if you'd like . . ." Get the picture? Just my tactic.

I think in most states the dealers are required to sell a car that meets all local requirements. Therefore I would not pay a dime to even have it put on the car. If it is required to be on the car and it was not sold "as is" then they have to put on the front plate.

Time to call MBUSA and ask to be connected to the Regional Rep and explain concerns about MB that don't meet state requirements and the price quoted.
I succeeded in getting my dealership to cooperate on a transmission issue that way.
