Oil filter discovery-VW parts

I normally use Mann oil filters on a 300E, but looking for one in the garage, I found a Mann filter used for a VW Jetta. Looking at the size, thread, just about everything, they look identical except the numbers on the box and part.

I looked up on a site and found they both have relief valves and same 25-35 psi relief spec. Are they interchangable? Anyone tried it?

I think Monday Id be calling Mann if its really an issue.

You have the VW # and should be able to get the MB # between now and then. Tooo many auto parts guys have no idea unless you have a couple you really trust.

Entirely possible. My 300E uses the same K&N filter as does my Audi 2.8 V6.

Is there a price difference or what is the motivation?

First I have a couple of the filters sitting in the garage. Otherwise, I've seen Purolator ads packaged with oil deals where they can never find a Merc 300E filter in the books, but they always locate a VW filter in the books. Makes for easy time when asking counter person for the filter before paying.

Not sure if you should take the risk your engine for a $4 filter...

...but by all means, someone has to do it! That person would not be me though

I can get the Bosch filters meant for my 300E online for about $4 each, why risk such a thing?
