Shifter housing bulb
Can this bulb be purchased from an average auto parts store or places like Wal-Mart? I have a heck of time trying to locate it in many of the online vendors.
What type of bulb is it? Hate to take off the wood to see what it is. Car is 87 300TD. TIA. |
I bought the bulb for my shift at Advantage Auto here in Fremont. Not sure if you would need the same bulb. I am picking up parts from the G Rap. MB dealer tomorow, as you are a michigander, I could pick one up and mail it to you. Let me know.
peace don |
Thanks you, don. I will try Advanced Auto as there is one in my town (Big Rapids).
I am sure you are talking about that GR dealer. They seem to somehow over charge whatever they sell. A gallon of MB coolant is $13, a pach of MB brake greese is $1.50, etc. I heard other dealers charge $10 and $1.00, respectively. When I need the front flex disk for my 1991 300E, I had to get it from them, $118!!! |
Yes, I was referring to the Grand Rapids dealer, and I agree they tend to overcharge. If you remember seeing "dilemma, 1/2 hr. to diagnose oil change", that was my post. One of the parts I am picking up is the flex disc for my 1990 300E, not too happy they are gonna charge me so much for it.
I hate going to the dealer. Don |
For me, it is even worse as they do not open on Saturdays and normally I cannot make a 70 mile one way trip there during the week.

Don,
Read you post about the 1/2 dirty engine. LOL. I just sold my 1990 300E this past summer and I think I am fairly familiar with it. I still have a 1991 300E. Please post or email me if you have any questions. The world is small. I met you, Diesel Don (in Rockford) all on this forum. We are all so close to each other, geographically. I have heard good things about Prestigious Imports but have never used them. I am thinking about taking my 1987 300TD there and let them take a look at the odometer for a try. |
yeah, small world huh! I am interested in how things come out at Prestige. I asked at the GR dealer parts counter for ATF, brake fluid, and coolant, and the guy told me they don't carry fluids, just buy it from the local auto shop and use manuf. accep. fluids.....Talk about service!!! I have actually purchased coolant there for a mechanic friend of mine about 2 years ago. Also, when I had the tranny serviced, when I picked up the car it had two huge bird droppings on the hood that were not there when I dropped it off (I wash my car if a bird even looks at it;) )

Bo:
Walmart sells the bulb (GE brand); cost is like $1.39. Take old one out and bring to store to compare to replacement. Good luck, Paul |
Paul:
Just came back from Wal-Mart and no luck. But got some Castrol Synten 10W-40 for $14.88 per 5-qt jug. I guess I have to take off the bulb and then go there to compare. By any chance you still have the packaging so you can look up the number? Thanks. |
sure, I'll post it tonight.
|
You're gonna have to take out the bulb anyhow to replace it, so why not take it out now and bring it to Wal-Mart to compare?
Anyway, the bulb is not limited to MB's so you won't find a MB part # on it, if that was what you were looking for. I'll go see if I still have the spare in my glovebox. Paul *edit -- saved only the top portion of packaging but here are some pics. It is literally the smallest bulb they sell I think. good luck |
|
Thanks, Paul.
That is all I need, GE 74. |
Got the GE 74 bulb but it is not perfect fit. The base is a bit larger than the factory bulb so it cannot go all the ways down to make contacts. Got it working temporary now but have to get the factory bulb.
Thanks. |
