16V cylinder honing

The time has come to rebuild the bottom end on my 1986 2.3-16V.
Are the cylinders on these cars honed as a part of the rebuild or are they coated like the 450 and therefore not to be honed. So I guess the question is to hone or not to hone the cylinder walls? I have no idea if the rings and cylinders are coated like the 450. Thanks

The only coated cylinders are on the aluminum block cars like the 420, 560, and soforth.

You are OK to hone the cylinders on the 16v. Are you just going to re-ring and replace the bearings?

Thanks for the quick reply Benzmac. Yes, the plan is to re-ring and replace the bearings. I don't expect to see a lot of wear on this engine as it only has 156,000 miles on it. I have uneven compression (1-125: 2-150 psi: 3-145 ps and 4-150 psi. hot readings) and the CLT also indicates bad rings. I change the oil every 3 months or 3,000 miles. So, I am a little disappointed, but it has been and still is a great daily driver. Otherwise, I'd use this as an excuse to buy another car...

Be SURE to have a valve job done at this point. IF the head is off, it is easy to have the valves and seats prepped and the valves lapped. I don't think I would replace the guides unless they are worn.

Leaky valves are the #1 complaint on these engines.

Yes, I will go ahead and get a valve job done at the same time. Just a quick question...are the piston ring sets in Fastlane ready to install or do I still have to measure and set ring end gap? Thanks again!

Most of the time they will fit. However, I do suggest to check them all and file if needed. (You will need to borrow a ring file if you need to file them.)
