My car has had a motor replacement, where do I find the numbers on it ?

Brought my dream car home, I knew the chassis and engine were "married" now I just want to locate the number of the engine ON the engine.
The powerplant was replaced with one from a salvage yard as it has the tell tale yellow painted numbers etc. I am looking for the engine numbers.

Also, if I pull the valve covers, do I need to replace the gaskets? They look like nice thick reusable ones..just wondering.
