Removing gear shifter w123

I have a 1985 w123 wagon that doesn't always like to start when in park, yet will start in neutral. I am pretty sure it is not the NSS. The backup lights work fine. I think it might be the bushing by the gear shift lever. Can someone instruct me as to how to remove the gear shift lever so that I can get to this bushing. OR, is it something else? The bushings on the transmission (from under the car) look to be in good shape. Thanks, Gregg
