1993 E-190 bad O2 sensor = no start???

I'm looking at this car to possibly purchase but it seems a bit suspicious.

The person selling it seems honest but maybe someone is not being honest with them.

The story is that the car will not run because the oxygen sensor needs to be replaced.

She said I was welcome to replace the O2 sensor myself before buying it.

However, it's a 4 hour drive from my house.

My experience is that a car will run with a bad O2 sensor, is that not the case with this car? Has anyone had their Benz die because of a bad O2 sensor?

Thanks!

Well I got some more info and it turns out the car DOES run but very rough.

The car has not been to a shop but according to all the local mech's she talked to it is probably the O2 sensor.

Sounds like a shot in the dark at best, I think I'll pass this up unless she decides to basically hand me the keys for nothing.

The oxygen sensor can only create a rough idle once the engine has warmed up!
