Transmission grease & Non-hardening sealant
 

When reviewing the rebuild instructions for 722.3 trans (300E), it says to use grease when assembling teflon rings. What kind of grease do you use for that?

Also, in the same manual, when installing the front pump housing, it says to use some kind of non-hardening sealant on the bolts and washers. What would you use for that?

For assembly use petroleum jelly (just regular ol' off the shelf stuff you get at a pharmacy or where ever, like by the bandaids).
The non hardening sealant I think what they might be getting at is Loctite? Never used anything there myself.....

Hylomar is one non hardening sealant used in engine repair work. Rolls Royce among others use it .

hs_300e, the MB dealers sell a black sealant that works well when redoing the upper timing chain cover U-shaped seal. Talk to the Parts Department at your local MB dealer about the proper sealant for that application.

I have read where some folks recommend Hylomar for the upper timing chain cover seal replacement so it may be a matter of which is most convenient/inexpensive for you to procure.

The MB black stuff is just a heavy duty industrial RTV. They also sell some orange stuff which is used on bolts into engine blocks on M119's and re-sealing things.
I like the orange sealant better than Hydamar. It is also sold by wurth. Never had a leak with it and it's nearly impossible to see after you wipe off the excess with a rag and a little brake cleaner.
Of course for timing covers... the corners get the RTV.

Get the correct stuff. You'll regret it if it ever has to come apart again.

Really. It's not hard to find. You may also end up with leaks there. The front pump likes to leak as it is. Don't offer another opportunity.
