Sunroof Problems on 126 300se, 1990

Hi, My sunroof does not close all the way, in back, especial y passenger side, it stays a llitte low and only if i tilt and bring back will it close normally, I had cleaned the tracks in the past and don't think it has much to do with it. Are there any typical problems with these things? Is it the seal dried up?

Will appreciate any info and how to.

boem, I have read that it takes an experienced tech to adjust the sunroof mechanism to make it function properly. If that's not you I recommend taking it to someone who is. Unless you want to risk making the situation worse.

I know that's not what you wanted to hear, just telling it like it is.

One easy thing you might try is to clean and wax the edges of the metal roof, then clean and slick up the weatherstrip with silicone or dialectric grease. This obviously won't help much if the roof has gotten out of adjustment, but if it's just sticking a bit, it does wonders.

Thank you

Thank's Ferdman and S-Class Guru I will take your suggestions. Will try wax and lube see what it does, I am handy and have tools but no experience in this field.

boem, it's best to use the sunroof grease that MB dealers sell. It comes in a large container that you will never use in your lifetime, and is quite expensive.

Contact George Murphy (Technical Director of the Mercedes Benz Club of America) at 865-482-9175 ... he sells the grease in 35mm film container which is more than you will ever need.

Sounds like my SDL, which suffers from a broken lifter.

That site shows everything you need.

Yeah, Hitman; I wasn't talking about waxing or lubing the sunroof mechanism itself, just the painted edges and the weatherstrip. The official sunroof lube might be pretty nasty if used on the external weather stripping.
My weather stripping and the edges of the roof were pretty sticky from old wax, rain, and dry rubber, and a good clean helped the roof pop up and down much better.

2x. Broken lifting arm. Replace both and be done with it. Or get the sunroof closed and unplug the motor.

So....where did you find those lift arms ???? How much where they???? These are the things I must know....lol....j/k....anyhoo....I have the same problem on my 560 SEL. I managed to close the sunroof manually, but I miss being able to use it :( and I can't find those things anywhere...haven't called the dealership yet because I don't want to go into stickershock...hehehe

I posted looking for a repair kit for the 140 chassis sunroof....my lifting arms are broken....seems to be a common problem no matter what model Benz one has.

ok...so HitMan ...where did you find those lift arms????

All of the various sliding roof mechanism bits appear to still be available from MB. That means that PeachParts and other I-net vendors, as well as your local MB dealer, should be able to fill your order.

Dealer.

I have yet to rebuild the one in my SDL, so cannot comment the labor involved. The rebuild does not look too complex, just involved. Probably a days worth of labor.

compu_85 09-02-2010 06:52 PM

It took me a couple hours over a couple days. It's really not too bad. IMO the hardest part is getting the broken pieces out if the whole mechanism is jammed up.

how easy or difficult is it to drop the headliner on a 560SEL? Anything tips I should be made aware of before I attempt and possibly break something
