DIY Wiring Harness Idea

Hey everybody,
I have read so many different posts on this site and benzworld and think I might have figured out a way to get my harness remanufactured quickly and on the cheap. First high temp insulation-I found a place that rewires restaurant stoves and ovens, wire safe up to 850 degrees, they have all gauges of it, second, they will do all soldering to the connectors for very cheap. The connectors are suppose to be low cost from dealer so I may order all of those so the entire harness will be renewed then take my old harness over there next week and get a quote. If this works out we may all be able to tell the stealership to jump off.
Wish me luck, I'll post my results.
Later
Curt

I redid mine no sweat and did it with normal gage new wire. Dont need high temp. Issue was US forced biodegradeable insulation used from 93-95. All foreign cars used it but the higher heat MB motors cooked it faster.

I do not believe that the use of biodegradable insultation was the result of US requirements, but rather, the influence of Greens on European politics in the early '90s.

You or somebody keeps repeating this. Do you have any support for it? Why would the U.S. government force the requirement only on foreign cars? And why would MB motors run substantially hotter than other foreign cars made with essentially the same technologies. Your assertion seems completely implausible in addition to being unsupported.

I was watcing the speed channel a few months ago. I happened to tune in during a short piece on restorations. The narrarator did a plug for a vendor that sells raw wire bundles specifically for under hood engine rewire projects. Wish I could remember the name of the vendor. Might be perfect for this application.....

Akin tothe silly regulation for the sealed beams in all the MB USA models while the rest of the world had lovely lens with easily replaceable bulbs.
After ages the regulation got dumped .

I dont have the silent recall notice anymore, but 5 years ago when I went through it I recieved a copy from the MB dealership which directly said imported vehicles by US standards with use an insulation that can be heated to 900 buy torch or oven to allow copper to be reclaimed at salvage yards is directly responsible for the issue. You can say whatever you want but MB said the car was 3 years out of being under there TSB recall (which is why I am sure I paid so little for the car) and was made to fend for myself.

Get a copy of it. Blaming the problem on U.S. government standards is silly given the number of U.S. sold cars that did not have the problem. The story I find most plausible, heard from a MBUSA rep, is simply that the Swedish harness supplier sold them a bill of goods. Even other German manufactured cars did not suffer the problem.

I wish Curt a lot of luck. If it pans out, and it's cheap enough, and you have ambition, you may make a cottage industry out of it with the membership here.
