1984 500SL shifter bushings replacement

My bushings are shot. I removed the console, shifter, and the 4 10mm bolts to the shifter mechanism but the mechanism does not move. Does it lift off or is there something under the car that holds it in place. It is very solid. Is there a pictorial somewhere that shows how to do this? I have seen a DIY on OZbenz but that is for a 123 model and is obviously done differently. Any help is appreciated.
Mike
