W126 91 alternate transmissions?

Since there is a good chance my reverse is going out on my trans, I am thinking of picking a trans up, rebuilding it, and then just doing a swap so I have little down time.

But I am wondering what other transmission will mount to a 5.6L in 91. Something that may make it a bit better on fuel at highway speeds would be nice. Something to get out of that crazy 2500 RPM window at 70mph.

Any & all of the MB transmissions that will bolt to that engine have the same
final gear ratio 1/1.

Any V8 trans from 1986-95 will bolt on.

Some might have a different cable OR output flange, but easily swapped

Any with overdrive? And particular one that is a "better built" trans? Or should just match what I have and call it a day?

Nope.

And the 722.3 is pretty robust all things considered.

Remember, back in the days of 55mph speed limits, this car putted down the road around the 1900-2000rpm area.

Of course you could go steal an early E32 750iL that is about 75hp more and cruises around 2100rpm @ 70mph in OD.

What about a 722.5? Can those handle the V8's torque?

I've often toyed with the idea of having one of those installed into my SDL. I'm having the same problem as the OP actually, so it's been on my mind a lot!

there might just be a lot of demand for a aftermarket od unit that was electrically operated and would bolt on the output shaft of the trans and then have the drive shaft shortened to bolt on to the od.what do you think?

For awhile I'd been looking for solid confirmation that a '86 722.323 could be swapped-out in favor of the upgraded 722.350 tranny from a '91.
So Hollander Interchange is wrong on this one, eh ? Good news at last !

Hello, I am wondering what this statement is all about? I have two transmissions in the garage right now. They both came out of two different cars but they were both the same model....1988 420 sel.

These are the part numbers stamped on each:
1- 126 270 05 00 722.324 0 308 1840 (This one mated to a 2:47 open diff) (car manufactured 09/88) 249,598 kms.
2- 126 270 29 00 722.355 0 314 2293 (car manufactured 03/88)

So...now that I read this thread I am wondering which one to use?
These transmissions look identical from the outside. What has been upgraded on this 722.355 compared to the 722.324?
I was told by the dealership parts guy that the relevent part numbers where just 722.3 and it stopped at that making these transmissions exactly the same. Odd since they are out of the same year of car...so what is different?
The 722.355 is the one I have decided to use as it looks abit cleaner. The 722.355 I have actually seen working as we drove the car. The other (722.324) reportedly works although I have not seen it myself....the car was stripped due to a failed timing chain.
