1993 400 SEL Broken Key Locked Trunk

Resource Pros:

I have an employee who has a 1993 400 SEL that had his key broke in two (not in any lock) and he had double secure locked the trunk and can't use the key now.

#1. Anyone know how much this will cost him to get a new key fitted and
made? Can this be done by someone other than MB?

#2. And...can he remove the seat and back rest to get into the trunk from
the inside fairly easy on this model?

Thanks,

Steve

I think he will have to go to the dealer with proof of ownership and have a key made using the VIN #. This would be the easiest way.

Not sure about #2. I dont have a W140, nor know how they are set up in that area, my uncle has one and I could ask him, but I am sure someone here can tell you.

By far I think the easiest thing to do would be to go to the dealer and order new key(s). I think there would be a lot of time spent on disassembling the rear seat compartment.

All US 140 cars had an infrared remote (switch blade) you can get one of those, with key from your dealer for approximately $150, you can also order just plain keys for about $15 the cars shipped wit two keys, two remotes, and a valet key. The new MB rules are demanding positive ID and a signature. My dealership made me give them a copy of my license, even tho I purchased the car there and had it in for service. They usually shipped are overnight depending where you live. I would not have a locksmith do it since they are more expensive and use brass keys not steel which is factory.
There is no way of getting into the trunk, since the gas tank is there, and getting the seat back out is a chore. If you really want to get into the trunk you coud realease it by finding the line going from the pump and putting a little pressure on it (like from a bike pump) pressure to unlock /vacuum to lock. Wait for the key!
