Mount Exhaust Muffler Vertically
Hello,
I am about to get an exhaust done by a muffler shop for my W201 and had some questions. I do not want to cut my bumper, but there isnt enough clearance because the magnaflow muffler is not long enough vertically to clear. the guy at the exhaust shop recommended I just take this muffler and mount it vertically instead of horizontally so the offset exhaust tip can clear the rear bumper while retaining stock exhaust hangers http://images.magnaflow.com/02product/parts/14586.jpg it just seems odd to me, but is there any sort of reason why i shouldn't do this? |
check with magnaflow.
it's possible there is a drain in the bottom and mounting it incorrectly could cause early rust! |
just called them this morning. they said its fine for the muffler to be mounted vertically as some kits use the muffler in a vertical orientation.
i suppose it will just look silly under my car if anyone bothers to look. |
John, recommend using a stock MB replacement muffler that fits your W210 properly. That way the job will be done correctly the first time, and you will avoid clearance issues.
|
not interested in a stock replacement muffler. i have a stock muffler on there now already.

Gonna hang pretty low, why not fab a slight bend at the connection so it is at an angle instead of up and down?????? Not that it will matter much but 2 90 degree bends will impede flow a bit.
|
in order to zig zag it like that, u need at least 4 inches of space, which doesnt exist with the setup.
we did the measurements and the muffler will only hang 1'' lower than stock. stock muffler is 7'' tall, magnaflow muffler is 8'' long (rotated it will stand 8'' tall). |
Sorry should have clarified that it should angle downward. Anyway, I dont see any prob other than it hanging low which by the sounds of it, wont be much.
|
leave it off. no muffler. just let the m103 be free..
