W126 1986 420SEL blower fan not working

I did a search and tried various things:
a) checked the fuse - the fuse base seems to have disintegrated - the fuse was positioned lower and looked like the base had burnt up; as a temporary measure I melted solder into the base, replaced the fuse and still no blower function - I read about a kit that might be available to move the fuse out of the fuse box (that was a MY 1987 change) - does anyone know a part number for that kit, or what it's called?
b) I removed the blower motor to check the brushes - no problem with them.
c) the blower does not respond to banging on it as some have suggested.

Anything else I should try - I am at a loss as to what to do next.

Thanks.
