W108, 250S Water Pump Belt

This weekend, my fan belt broke on my '67 250S. I figured since I needed to replace that, I would also replace the fatigued upper and lower radiator hoses, and thermostat. When I took off the thermostat housing, there was NO thermostat in there. Anyone ever heard of this? Is it ok for the engine to run without a (87 C) thermostat? Any comments or suggestions are most appreciated.
Thanks.
