1999 e320 4matic wagon purchase
 

Thinking of purchasing a '99 wagon with 193k miles on it. Is this just too many miles for a W210? What type of real world mileage do these get?

Everything depends upon the condition and the quality of service it has received during the first 193K.

There are a few items like O2 sensors, the MAF and spark plugs which are normally 100K repairs so they may be due for a second replacement. The service records will tell you that. You need to do a thorough inspection which includes rust, suspension, exhaust system, cats, engine compression and tranny pan inspection at a minimum. An older MB can seem like an attractive deal since they have depreciated so much but it costs more to repair/service them than it did when they were new because of higher parts and labor costs.

There is thread on most MB websites such as "How many miles does your W210 have?" Many people post values of plus 200K. The diesels seem to do a little better than the gassers.

getting a PPI at a known good MB shop would be my 1st consideration.

193K is not high mileage, the auto trans would be my biggest concern

Definitely have a PPI done by a reputable indie so you find out about any pending major repairs.

I get 29mpg - highway with our 1998 E320 with RWD. Expect mid 20's with an AWD wagon.

I'm with MBDoc on this one. If the transmission has already been rebuilt (or better, replaced with a factory new unit), then I would consider it. If not, I would pass. The cost of transmission repair might exceed what you pay for the car! Approaching 200K, the trans might have life left in it, but it might not either.
