Rotor choices

I need to do the rotors on the cabrio and the pads asap. No grinding sounds but they need to be done this time around.

I called Lee at fastlane to figure out which rotors to get and he had ATE for $70 Brembo for a little less and Zimmerman rotors for $44 each...

I like saving money but I also like stopping with my car. Anyone have any reviews of the Zimmerman rotors? I also need to get brake pads, forgot to ask which to get since there is like a chasis range for the cabrio for rotors and pads

People here seem to like Textar brake pads, myself included.

Are the Zimmermans cross drilled and slotted?

ATE rotors are what I got for the fronts when I had them done, no problems with them.

no idea if the zimmermans are drilled/slotted. Lee send a PM

it sucks my car is the cut off for the more expensive. The earlier numbers get the ATE premium rotors which are like $45 each or the $70 ATE's... I'd rather spend $45 on ATE's since I know the brand and can trust it.

I also need to get some anti squeel paste from autozoo

Zimmerman has cast holes which precludes stress as on a drilled rotor.

Zimmerman is German made and OEM quality.

I use Zimmerman with Textar pads on my M103-12V TT which perform very well.
Consider I have twice the power of a stock M103-12V

I dont know if the zimmermans have the holes. But since they are cast like that it is a good thing then. I'll find out.

I also need a rear grease seal for the hub(s) if I am not mistaken for when I do the rotors.

I got the slotted ATE premiums for my 300E about 6k ago along with OEM pads. They are very good, worth the money IMO

Don, installed Zimmerman front rotors on my son's 2005 BMW 745i recently. The rotors were high quality and were coated with a gray primer, just like rotors bought from a MB dealer. I would opt for the Zimmerman rotors.

There is no need to touch the wheel bearings. Simply remove the set screw and separate the rotor from the hub. You may have to pursuade the rotor with a hammer since they sometimes rust to the hub.

the w124 rotor comes off that easy? I thought the w123/124/126 were the same. I did the rotors on my w126 and I had to remove the hub, put the thing in a vice and remove the bolts on the rear of the disc to separate the two

Not on a W124. I just did the rotors on mine, just a set screw. I had to beat the **** out of the to get them to brake free. I even had to get a BFH, the mallet wasn't doing a thing. Good thing I was replacing them.

Just to relate to the subject, I'm redoing most of my 300Es brake system. Rotors, pads, calipers, hoses, all the rear steel lines and parking brakes.
I used ATE rotors & pads on the back, Centric rotors & bendix pads on the front. The calipers were all Centric rebuilds which turned out to be from OEM Girling & ATE cores. I paid the $96 for the 3 rear factory steel brake lines assuming they would be pre-bent. They weren't, so I'm returning the the two short L & R ones ($14 @ the parts store) but I'm going to use the ($38) factory line that routes to the rear as store doesn't have a single line that long.
My parking brake was in pretty bad shape, lots of rust with the shoe material crumbling and falling apart.

I hope using Centric wasn't a mistake, I have no experience with them.

I have zimmerman on all 4 corners of both of my cars, they perform amazingly well. I've put 35k on them on my W126....and about 22k on them in my W124, they stop like heck and last a long time.

My dad has them in the front of one of his W126's also, and they have performed well on that car too.

They have holes in them and you can feel the power build under heavy stops rather than fade. Its pretty awesome.

awesome, that makes the job so much easier. I'll put some anti seize on the back of the new rotors so they don't rust themselves to the hub

Don, unless you drive extremely aggressively or race your car vented front rotors should be fine. Don't see the need for drilled or slotted rotors for everyday normal driving.
