HELP rotor driver - camshaft adapter
I just swapped out my cam & rockers in my 88 260e M103. I bought a used head that was redone to pull the cam and rockers from. Thanks to the info in this forum all went well until I was buttoning it up when I discovered the rotor driver on mine would not fit. I imagine the new cam was the updated cam. The driver was about 2mm too fat and 3 mm too long. I live 75 miles from a dealer and have no other car. I mounted the driver in a drill with an engine stud and spun it while I ran a file over it to cut it down till it fit and extended the same amount out of the cam as the old one. I could not find a 7mm internal hex bolt so I used a hex cap bolt (hard) and ground down a socket to fit in the hole. The cap installed easily and the car fired right up. (nice not to have the tick!)
My question is do you think it is safe to drive to the dealer on monday to get the new driver? Thanks Charlie |
I wouldn't want to guarantee it, of course no one would. But I think it should work OK. If you have another easy option for a vehicle, might be better, but if not I'd go for it.

Needed it fixed
Thanks. I figgered all it does is turn with no great torque on it. I hate having to jerry-rig anything on this car.
It for sure will help me sleep better tonight not hearing that it would fail and destroy the engine!!! Charlie |
Charlie, instead of risking a serious problem with your engine consider having the dealer mail/ship the part you need.

Not an option
I always get my parts UPS. Just wont get it until wed.at the earliest and I need to go to work and get dog food!
Thanks Charlie |
I'd be suprised if they stocked the part..
No friend that can take you or pick it up? It's a gamble- if something goes wrong- you'll pay for the tow and probably have to replace additional parts. M |
Thanks
No, alone here now that my kids are off to school. I will have my new one this morning.
THANKS! |
Did it go OK?

He's stuck in a snowbank somewhere on the side of the road with a convex dent in his hood! I hope not, anyway.

Thanks for asking
All went well thank you! Put the right one in and now I have a light paperweight. If I was not afraid of inevitable -I told you so's- I probably could have left it in. I had 360 miles (I have a long commute) before I swapped it.
Thanks again Charlie |
