722 350 transmission rebuild cost?
 

Before I foor the final bill for a rebuildable core or a "it should work great" transmission, I was wondering how much it costs to self-rebuild a trans.

Just a rough idea. And I am sure there are different degrees. So lets say the band, seals, pump, etc. I would look up parts, but thats a lot and I am not familiar.

Basically if anyone here has done it, what was the final bill? From what I have seen, it will probably well exceed the price of $350 I have now on a "good" trans.

The few odd internal tools needed are only about $250.

Full banner kits are about $230, not including bands as they do not really wear much. Bulkpart.com is about $430 for it with bands.

Also, I would skip a reman torque converter. There is really nothing to die in these as there is no lock up clutch. I mean the internal bearing may die, but chances are pretty damned low.



I would not trust a $350 'good, used' trans the way these wear. Even 100k ones can have a pile of city driving and have a near dead reverse clutch pack... putting you right back to where you are now.

Most of the total cost involved it is the removal and reinstallation.

^ Agreed. Don't ever put a used tranny in unless you KNOW it has been rebuilt. It is a waste of time and money as it may have to come out again in 20k miles when reverse goes out. Rebuild your own or nothing!

u need very clean environment, take pics as u take anything apart, the valve body can be very tricky or send out someone else do it.
if u can find a way of taking out tranny cheaply or diy u could always try it.
in the end u may want a tranny shop to test all the ports for u , run air into it and see if they lock up or engage.
save u griefs as it has to come out again.

I would be doing all the work including R&R. Plan was to pick up a bad core and rebuild it, or find a decent used one with warranty.

Personally I would rather find a $100 core and rebuild it myself. Then I know I am goo for a long time. Actually, I would like to service my own, but I would hate the down time since it would put me into driving a new Beetle. Yuk!

Just rebuilt my transmission, total cost was just over $300 with some steels that were worn and springs + retainer on the b3. Rebuild kit from *********.com had everything I needed plus extras. I just got it running ans so far so good...just need to figure out why kick down is not working. I had a severe head gasket leak, front main seal leak, rear main seal leak, light coolant leaks, light valve cover leaks, so pulled motor to rebuild. Transmission took less time than freshening up the motor...cheaper too.

Good to know. I am not new to transmissions, but I am very new to MB setups. I am sure it will not be hard. I always say I would rather rebuild a trans than an engine.

the rebuild kit offered thru fastlane says "Contains all gaskets,seals and friction discs but no steel spacers"

are these steel spaces needed for the rebuild? if so where can i get them?

I believe the steel spacers are just the "disks" inbetween the b3 bands, in which case, no, reuse the ones in there. If they are scorn badly (which I doubt), just rough them up with some sandpaper and put them back in.

. I recently removed my transmission for a leaking front seal, turned out to be more than that.

With 170k KM i was surprised to see that the four reverse plates were nearly gone , all the other parts hardly showed any wear .I Replaced all the seals as well as the worn out 4 reverse disks .
The reverse shift is quick to engage and the forward shifts are very smooth,barely perceptible.

where do i get the K1 K@ springs etc for valve body? i dont see them in the fastlane catalog?

im looking into superior shift kit... am i wasting money buying that if im rebuild my trans?

I have read that there is little wear, generally, in a 722.3 transmission except for the B3 clutch. Is that true? What is it that causes the 2-3 flare?

Is there a good DiY around for removing the trans? How high does the car have to be.

And finally, will the trans from a 93 124 with the DOHC fit in a 91 124? Thinking of overhauling a 93 to put in my 91.

Flare if I remember correctly is more Vacuum related then most other things. best to diagnose that before going all in and just rebuilding
