SRS warning light randomly flashes on 91 w124

Hey all, just had a quick question, my SRS light tends to flicker on and off sometimes on my w124. I've seen it flicker, stay on for a good 10 seconds and turn off again. I don't know if there is a way to diagnose this since it doesn't stay on long enough for me to check the error code. Should I be concerned? Or just not worry about it until it flickers on and stays on?

I seem to remember that this is not uncommon and can be caused by the connection in the steering wheel...

Or, this post might be helpful..

Yup, my guess would be the steering wheel's contact ring. It's what causes mine to do it every while. With my car, it only happens with a couple steering wheel positions, just left or right of dead center.

Does the wheel squeek when you turn?

Merkey- thanks for the link! I'm starting to think it in fact may be the steering wheel.

Crazy_Nate- I'm starting to think, this is the problem, so it's a contact ring? Would it be a time consuming repair? My steering wheel doesn't squeak but it does make a little whirring noise.

Are you hearing the moan of the power steering pump with old fluid in it?

I'm not sure if I'd want an airbag from 1991 exploding in my face, but that's just me.

I wouldn't worry about it.

Well put. I won't worry about it then.. Thanks!

I'm confident the airbags and belt tensioners are still working correctly.

Are 1991 US spec airbags overpowered? Yes. Don't sit too close too the wheel. I'll keep my overpowered airbags, I don't want a broken face in a wreck.

I was in a collision driving a 1987 560SL. I ended up hitting a small tree and poof, there goes the air bag. It didn't seem like anything to me compared to having a newer airbag blow on me -2006 Mustang airbag. I am a tall guy so I don't sit too close to the wheel

What I did notice though with these old cars that they tend to have alot of burning white powder after the accident.
