W126 dash resistors, pot - need help
In an attempt to get my fuel gauge working right I need the resister value and the pot size in the cluster. Anyone have a spare cluster laying around that could look to see what is there?
I need to order a bunch of capacitors for another project, so I may as well order these parts. But frankly I dont feel like taking the dash apart again! |
Bump! Anyone have a spare they can open and look at?
|
I happen to have one right in front of me. :D
The resistor for fuel gauge is marked 68R 1096. The pot is stamped 326197. Hopefully that is what you need. I'm not a electronics expert so those may not be the ID numbers you are looking for. |
68R = 68 ohms which sounds right
|
Well what I really need is the color code bands on the resistors. There is also a gold or silver band on one end. These should big grey ones that are mounted very high, no flush with the board. There should be two of them, if memory serves, next to the pot.
|
edit:
If its a 68R, then I think the bands would be BLUE/GREY/BLACK/GOLD. Look right? |
And given the "burnt" look of this area on the backside of the board I have seen and other have reported, I think I will try 2 watt resistors. I think the stock at 0.5 watt and just dont handle the load and are being heat baked.

Fuel gauge is from a first year W126 (1981). The resistors are not color banded at all like you typically see, and thats how you decode them, I know that much. These resistors are a solid gray color, however.

Took mine apart. 68 indeed. Pot is 150k, but I can not find an exact replacement. Ordered resistors in 1w, 2w and 3watt variations.
|
150k sounds very very high for a dimmer pot. Are you sure the PO didnt just stick something in there?
|
I will check again, but I am pretty sure it was 150k. Its the "fine tuning" pot that adjusts the full/empty range - at least that is my understanding. Looks like it is/was original.
I am only replacing resistors first, then I will move onto the pot if needed. But I will check my reference photos again and post if I was wrong about 150k. |
