Mercedes Dash Cluster Hooks?

Hi All,

I tried to remove my cluster in my 2000 E320 using the good old hanger trick. Well, it would not budge, and the hook part of the hanger kept bending. Should I just get the ones from mercedes? I don't mind spending the money if they will work better than the hanger method.

I read people have had good luck with a hanger, but I tried for a least an hour and it would not come out. I hope I didn't damage anything inside during the process.

Thanks!

I have used the coat hanger method on my W124 with great success. I'm not sure about the cluster layout on a W210 but I would suspect it is similar. Usually you have to grab near the bottom corners where the tabs are located. If you go to far you won't catch the tabs. Try pulling up a bit on the dashboard lip to relieve pressure on the cluster.

The Mercedes tools work great, and are helpful for other tasks like vent removal. Very strong, good handles, and you always know which way the hooks are pointing.

You can also push it out from the back on 126s. Have to take the trim lower panel off first.

If you go to a paint store they should have the old school steel paint can openers. They look like a yield sign with small upturned hook at the end. You will need to file the hook/blade down a mill or two and you will be good to go. ohhh... and the bonus is, they have built in bottle opener in them to celebrate a job well done.:D

I used some flat aluminum stock I had lying around from Home depot its like 3/4in wide maybe 1/8 thick I bent the ends over like a 1/2in with some visegrips and squeezed them all most flat, just enough to grap the inside edge and bent them like an L for a handle, they work awsome the hanger thing did not work for me either!

If they've never been pulled before, they are really tight in there. The coat hanger is really a large diameter and can mark up the surround, too.

They don't have to be the genuine MB ones (dealer only and pretty expensive), the ones on ebay are perfectly fine.

I think I paid around $20 online for mine, less IIRC, OE.

I agree with this 100%, just buy the proper tools they work great.

You will use them again.

Good luck getting an MB dealer to sell you special tools.

Baum Tools is the place to go.

Thanks, guys. Getting the mercedes ones in the mail soon. I got them on ebay pretty cheap. I'm hoping they do the trick!
