'90 300E - Window Switches
Can anyone tell me if I need to remove the center console to install new window switches? I'm afraid of damaging the wood overlay.

If your car is similar to mine, and I think it is, you will have to remove the wood to change the switches. Removing the wood is quite easy, there's a good thread for it here:
