Expensive Part (Door Striker)
Had trouble closing the left rear door on my 89 300se due to a worn door strike. http://img.eautopartscatalog.com/liv...31625506EZ.JPG
Was too lazy so took it to my favorite shop. Got the bill: $120 for the part! Good thing he only charged me $20 for labor. Thinking this might have been a misquote on price, I called up Greenway Mercedes in town, a place known for high-priced parts, and got a quote fpr $216 to order the part. Finally I logged on here and found the part on-line for $40. Expensive lesson learned. But, can anyone explain the wide range of prices? |
You'll always find wide ranges of prices for most any part for any make. I don't know what the original Mercedes striker lists for, but I've purchased OE Mercedes ones for $25 each online. I just buy parts when I see them very reasonable. I have a good amount of original Mercedes spare parts on hand. That way, when I really do need something I don't get slammed on the price.
The strikers I've seen out there are usually Kratex and EZ. I don't know the durability of either, but they can be had for less than 20 bucks each. By the way, if you have to pay someone to diagnose and replace a striker, you may have the wrong car. |

My doors are not closing on my 1978 300D. The driver's side was OK but all of a sudden it would not latch. The rounded tab had broken off. The other side has the striker mostly intact. I will replace them, but I would like to know how to adjust them. Can anyone explain the process?

Answer
Really have to slam the doors to get them to close...
