PEA was developed and patented by Chevron and eventually trademarked under the name "Techron". Not much difference between the two products except marketing style/hype. The other treatment that you often see mentioned is Seafoam. Seafoam is primarily naptha, which is a much harsher solvent, |
Ditto with most... 99% of these products are snake oil & do little good.
There are a few exceptions. |

Well If MBDoc says so,I guess I'll quit using my MMO for gas mileage.

I think what you'll discover is if you use a tier one gas, it typically has PEA and detergents in it.
Using an fuel system additive from new at oil change intervals will tend to keep the fuel system operating as it should. Mercedes does list Techron along with it's own additive as acceptable for use. |
My '91 4matic was mine from new, always burned Mobil premium and was driven "spirited" and 50/50 highway/rural with regular high-speed runs. By about 60,000mles it was starting to exhibit the typical CIS stutter at light throttle application and occasional miss at idle.
I tried several cans of Chevron/Techron as prescribed by my dealer, no change at all. I tried a couple of other additives hoping something would help, nothing did. About a year later I decided to try the RedLine, poured in a bottle to a full tank (clean-up dose) and it cleared up within 70miles (I remember it well, reading the mileage on the trip-odometer when I noticed throttle response had returned) and never returned as I used the maintenance dose with every-other fillup since (1oz/19gallons) until I sold the car with 119,000 miles on it. I also had the same results in the CIS quattro, and have suggested it to others on and off this forum for their older CIS cars, and I have gotten many favorable reviews and thank-yous. So what is the difference chemically? Don't know, don't care. At the time Redline was claiming that they were the only one to not negatively impact the pH of the oil and that their product was detergent-based, again I didn't worry about it since it worked. So whatever works for others is fine, for me it was Techron: 0% and Redline 100%. |
