Post Accident Questions

Hey everyone!

Got involved in an accident with my 1991 300E 2 weeks ago and am trying to put it back together. Almost there. I do have 2 questions about steering wheels:

1. After an accident where the airbag deploys (20 year old airbag still worked! Saved my face), does the bottom of the steering wheel get pushed into the column? It feels like the bottom of the steering wheel is closer to my knees.

2. Would a 1988 300E steering wheel fit a 1991 300E? i'm assuming they are both W124s

Thanks in advance for all your expertise!

Nick

With no hard facts to back me up, I would say that it would fit. If you don't have to pay an arm or a leg for the older model steering wheel, or if you can return it if it doesn't work, I would say try it. You might be able to see if part numbers are the same on EPC, but even if they are different, it still might work OK.

if they look the same they should work, I think the only difference is the 95's that got the facelift. but again, check the Part numbers, That will tell you definitively

The airbag deployment doesn't affect the position of the wheel, but the accident could have. Watch the slow-mo crash tests at iihs.org.

Not on a 1991 with 197K on it. Blue book can't be more than $1500.
On a positive note, e-bay and pick/pull has gotten all my parts down to approx. $600 and installation with paint and some body work is about $700 for a total of 1300. My original body shop estimate was 6K
