'96 W140 S500 Mass Air Flow Sensor

I need some advice on what to do with my '96 W140 S500. It started running rough and the Check Engine Light started flashing. I took it to a shop and they said that the diagnostic codes indicate a malfunction of the Mass Air Flow Sensor. The cost for the part alone is $550.00. They said that they would replace it and that would not guarantee a fix.

What else could be causing the error codes, dirty air filters, etc? Should I take it somewhere else?

Please advise.

Thanks,
Mike

It's OBDII - get your hands on a code reader and read the codes yourself.

Google those code numbers and you will get a description as well as some analysis. 110 is the air intake sensor, which at $15 is a good place to start. Air mass sensor should be available for about half of that, and takes only about five minutes to put in.

Got the following from:
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=263229 and
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=221468

P0101 Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Range/Performance Problem
P0102 Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Low Input
P0104 Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Intermittent
P0108 Manifold Absolute Pressure/Barometric Pressure Circuit High Input

Nothing on 0110.
