m103 Valve stem seals replacement
Hi guys.i just did my valve stem seals replacement thanks to" RON IN SC" on start up everything was fine until i drove the car. smoking like crazy and it was not before just using about 2 qts.oil every 500mls,i did notice the seals were all the same color (brown) so i installed them anyway.Is there anything i should have done during installation.thanks for your advice.

The difference is in the hole. In the set I used, they all, at first glance appeared the same, all brown.
But half have bigger diameter holes for the bigger dia EX valve stems and half have the smaller diameter for the IN valve stems. You might have put some or quite possibly all the bigger dia. ones on the intake valves. They will leak, not being tight enough to seal...... |

Thanks gschira,today i decided to go for it and check all the valves.as you stated there were ex.seals on int. valves and vice-versa.I installed the seals as they are supposed to and she started and idled for a while.tomorrow i will go a test drive to see if she no longer blows smoke.Will let you know the outcome..:cool:

Curious...how hard was it to replace the seals? Also...would you / did you have external leaks from the old seals or was it just burning through oil?

ps2cho...I'm sure I need to do this. How hard is it and what tools did you use? Also, would these cause any type of leak at the headgasket if they are bad?

ideally you need an air compressor... an attachment that screws into the cylinder...and the correct spring compressor... i never had the correct spring compressor....and never got a set of seals on the cylinder next to the firewall... the next time i do this.... it will be with the correct spring compressor. do a search.... you should find the answers oh..and some magnetic hands to catch some pieces on the spring.... there are pictures out there.... i am sure a pro could do it in two hours.... i do it painstakingly..and it took me about 5... and that was doing 10 or 11 seals...not all 12 |
This is the tool type I used and it allows you the ability to do the 6th cylinder.

I used a cheap spring compressor from NAPA. No problem with clearance on #6 cylinder on 190E. I think on some other models of MB there's a problem with clearance using some cheap valve spring compressors on that cylinder.
