Transmission Application Info Needed

I have a 1989 300E Euro version with a 5 speed manual. The transmission needs to be replaced, or possibly rebuilt, but these are not available in the US as far as I can tell. I was wondering if a 5 speed from a 190E 2.6 would work. That seems to be the only 5 speed imported in large numbers. Also, if anyone could point me to a guide for what the part numbers mean, that would be helpful as well. The number relayed to me by my nechanic on this on is 126 260 17 01 717 433. I think I have the first few figured out, but not all of them.

Any help would be appreciated.

5 Speed from the 190E 2.6 is the same and should swap right in. The "Getrag" 5 speed with dogleg reverse which was found in the 190 2.3-16, is slightly different but should still be a relatively easy swap since your car is already a manual. The Getrag is geared better for sure.

MBUSA did offer the 300E with manual trans for several years, they were great cars!

Would think a few larger YARDS would have a trans from one of those cars..

The 2.6 trans will fit, also the 1988-90 190D 2.5 had that option as well.

Thanks! I heard that there were a few of the 5 speed 300Es imported in 86-87, but I have not been able to find one. There were a lot more of the 190s with the 2.6 5 speed, and I have located a few in junk yards. Thanks again!

I heard actual US deliveries of the manual 300E were in the HUNDREDS over the two years that they offered the option. Of course many of the manual 300E's you see are most likely brought over from Europe, and were not original US delivery cars.

And if you do buy a used on, be sure to sell your core, there are folks here that would buy it happily if the price is right. Thx -CTH

It was 86 and 88 that it was offered in the U.S., nothing in 87 strangely. In 88 it was on the 260s and the 300s, but still more in 86.
