Fuel Sending Unit

Hi I would like to know if anyone can tell me, My 1987 190E fuel gauge don't work; is it my sending unit, I have taken it out & cleaned the outside but haven't taken it completely apart, when I start the car the fuel gauge moves a little, could it be electrical, & if so how can I check that ..thanks

The fuel sender has a basic variable resistor system, should be approx 5 ohm full & approx 85 ohm empty.
