Governor again

'91 300e 2.6 - No upshift

I replaced the governor gear last month. Today it appears to have failed again. After the first repair, I did notice a change in shifting. It seemed to shift at a higher rpm than before but still smoothly. I thought this might be because I had messed with the throtle cable eariler when diagnosing the original failure and had not gotten back to adjusting it.

Not wanting to make this a regular repair, what should I be looking at as a possible cause for repeated failure. Could the governor itself be defective and that is causing it to strip out the gear? I"ve seen posts about removing the secondary pump, is that something I should pursue? Also, I noticed that the drive gear on the main shaft showed some wear. Is it possible to replace that without removing the transmission?

You help is appreciated as always.

If the governor gear broke, then most likely so did the plastic gear that drives it.

Removal of the rear cover is required to replace that other gear.

Could be... When I pulled the 190 2.6's transmission to do the replacement, I did notice that the mainshaft plastic gear had a hairline crack... I replaced both grears along with all the associated rings and seals... not a problem again.

Thanks for the replies. Can the rear cover be removed without pulling the transmission?

Yes, good luck

The drive gear is shot and has to be replaced. I have to wait for parts to come in but in the meanwhile want to start pulling the rear cover. Can anyone tell me the size socket I need to remove the 12 point collar nut on the end?

I think the 722.4 trans used a 27mm deep socket, about 1 1/16"
