94 E320, blower runs fine but not a lot of air flow
 
My blower motor runs fine on high and low speeds but there does not seems to be much air coming out of the vents (or anywhere else). I did remove the blower motor and lubricated the bearings etc. Is it possible I put it in backwards?? (I never removed he cages from the motor shaft) Looked like there was only one way to install it. Any ideas?

One more thing to add. The filters under the wiper motor looked clean and I used compressed air and made sure there was no dust etc trapped in them.

Don't forget the evap could also have 17 years of dust/crud accumulation.

how long have you had the car?

When I took the blower out I could see the evap and it looked clean. I will check again. I have had the car for two weeks. No other problems with the car. lots of power and everything works well. Are there other filters besides the ones below the wiper motor? Is it possible to put the blower motor/fan assembly in backwards?

Yes, possible to wire back wards.

In fact many aftermarket brands have that issue!

My motor wires from the car match the color of the wires on the motor so I'm assuming I have the original motor (maybe not??) Is it possible to physically put the motor/cage assembly in backwards? What direction should the motor turn and what is the correct orientation of the cages?

Are your vents opening?
 
Could be the vacuum pods have failed and the vents are closed.

Don't know where the vacuum pods are located. I'm hoping the blower motor is just in backwards. Are the pods hard to get too?

The motor wires are polarized, one male and one female, I don't believe that they can be plugged in backward.

The motor cages can be installed bacward, they should spin with the edge forward on the outside of the louvers.

Can you explain what you mean by the forward edge on the outside of the louvers? Do you mean the blades should be cupped toward the front of the car as the motor rotates counterclockwise while looking at the drivers side of the motor?

They are cupped toward the direction of rotation, but I can't remember the direction in the car. There is a replacement pictorial here somewhere, should have a useful photo for orientation in the car.

I would think if you put the blower in the wrong way, while it may physically fit, the orientation of the wiring hookup would be completely different.

When I was replacing my blower motor regulator a few months ago, I was curious as to whether one could reinstall the motor backwards. On mine, it was impossible because of the way the cages are designed on each end. It would not fit backwards because one cage was closer to the motor than the other. Of course, like mbdoc said, it is possible to have the wires swapped around and it wouldn't surprise me if some aftermarket part had the colored wires incorrect.

Could your regulator simply be going bad and that is the reason you are not getting the air flow you should? I was having that problem with mine and I originally thought it was the blower motor. I changed the regulator and ended up keeping the same motor, but the flow increased with the new regulator.

Worked on the blower last night and found that the blower cage assembly was installed backwards. On the 94 E320 it is possible to put the assembly in either direction since the assembly is symetrical. Correct rotation of the motor shaft is CCW as one looks at the motor shat from the drivers side. The "cups" of the blower face toward the front of the car as they rotate.
