Transmission vibration problems in all gears

Transmission vibration problem while in gear/stopped

Just picked up a 91 300e 3.0 and am having difficulty with vibration while stopped and in gear. Car shakes noticeably ( like riding in a diesel bus! ). Runs very well at speed and during acceleration. Idles ok and smooth. When shifted into gear it klunks then starts to shake until I release the break. Then it goes away. Any Ideas where to start?
