Bypass Oil Filter for 1991 560SEL
 

I would like to try and install a bypass oil filter on the 1991 560SEL. I've spent some time looking at the engine bay trying to find a suitable location and connect point (inlet/outlet). Any ideas as to how this might best be accomplished? Are there oil cooler lines on a 560SEL that could be tapped?

you need an adapter that will replace the oil filter housing. you don't want a filter downstream, like oil cooler hoses, too much dirt still in the motor. i've never seen such an adapter. good luck, chuck.

I'd recommend not installing an aux filter. The 117 engine is very susceptible to low, or poor oil quality. Just change it often and the engine will last longer than you want to own the car.

Huh? Since when? Just run it off some existing oil pressure fitting... like the oil pressure sender to the IN of the bypass filter. Then run the OUT back to the valve cover. Not much to it. It will be slow to cycle all eight quarts but work fine.

there's a reason bypass kits come with 1/2"or bigger hose-volume, volume volume! you couldn't get enough oil through an existing port, like the oil pressure switch. the 1s i've seen for domestic applications come with 1/2" pipe female threads. a good bit bigger than the 10 or 12mm hole you might have in mind. and so it goes, chuck.

What is needed here is a partial flow filtration set up, it uses a small line to sample off the full flow filter, usually at the oil pressure sender to gradually remove contaminants.

Surely there must be room for the aux filter somewhere under the hood on that big S-body?

Pssst! has anyone got a bypass filter adapter (full flow, to remount the filter) for a W115 chassis (gasser or diesel) if so please Email me! I've been looking for one for 10 years. They do exist, an aftermarket thing.

What in the hell are you talking about? The OP is talking about a piggyback bypass system like this:

i wasn't aware of the amsoil kit, my bad. i've always seen the full flow kits. don't know the benefit of a piggy back bypass system, have to look into it. thanks, chuck.

Replacing the suspension bushings in one of these old cars (or something like that) will actually accomplish something. Installation of an aux filter won't.
