CLK500 fuel smell in garage

My car has a gas smell. Any ideas what may cause this?

Where and when does it smell? From engine compartment, inside cabin etc.

I went in the garage and sniffed around. Strongest smell from the left rear wheel arch. No smell in the car.

That is where the fuel pumps are located.

Thanks! I believe I need to remove the rear seat to have a look. Let me know if you have other information...

The fuel pump is located inside the left side of the tank. Go ahead and remove the rear seat bench though. You can then remove the access covers for the pump/level senders. It's not uncommon for the level sender seals to leak with age.

Thanks a bunch! I will look into it tonight. Any reason the smell is outside the car and not inside? That is what is throwing me off.

Correction. The fuel pump is inside the tank on the right side. Sorry for the error.
