1988 420SEL set up the timing

Please help. We have changed the chain sliders on this car, and now we are trying to do the timing. Can we have your help on the best procedures to follow? We have spent the whole day today, only to find out at the end te timing was off 80%?! so the car could not start. We surely must have missed something
