W124 M104: High RPM stumble in 2nd gear - no power, hesitates to upshift
All -
I'm chasing a problem with my new to me, very low mileage 1994 E320. The car has just under 22K miles on it, and has already had its wiring harness replaced. Excellent service history in the stamp book, wherein most servicing was done because of time, not mileage. Anyway, I'm chasing two problems. 1. Cruise control is inop 2. High RPM miss/lack of power in 2nd gear The miss is very reproducible, but not 100% reproducible. From a dead stop or a slow roll, if I launch at full throttle, the car pulls great and sounds just fine through 1st gear and most of 2nd. At approximately 5000rpm in 2nd, it's as though the car hits a rev limiter of some kind. It sits there at the same rpm as long as I remain at full throttle. If I lift, of course, the car upshifts and everything is as normal. Transmission responds fine to throttle, kicks down as appropriate, but the problem resurfaces if it kicks down to 2nd gear. My gut tells me it's the ETA, possibly its wiring. I have a junkyard ETA in hand, and plan to send it off to get it gone through. My soldering skills aren't quite up to the task of desoldering circuit boards and the like. I also have a code reader on its way to me, but don't have it in hand yet. The fuse for the aux fans looked dodgy, so I replaced it. All the others in the engine bay, driver's side fuse box, are fine. Has anyone run across something like this? Search results are kind of hit or miss. Found some similar sounding issues, but they were for cars other than a W124, and some went unanswered. --Karl |
