m103 cam wear on 300sel

I just had the rockers and cam checked(loud clicking noise) and discovered the cam and rockers were worn well beyond tolerances. Being replaced today.

My question is... what could have caused this? The front two cylinders were the worst, gradually better towards the rear...the last one being perfect. Is there something else that should be done as well?

Thanks
Warren

It's a common thing for the early style cams. Due to angle of engine, cam gets more oil towards the back.

m103

Mine might be in for the same operation soon.
What might I expect to pay for this "maintenance " item ?

I have a great MB mechanic that has yrs of experience. I got lucky. New parts cost prohibitive... he found a great set from "used" yard...fairly inexpensive, but do not know if they are the 90 and above upgrade. Do not have final bill yet. He is doing the oil seals as well, since cam is off. I am hoping this helps with smogging in california.

He also told me it helps with catalytic converter also...no oil passing seals to get in exhaust, so cat purges itself(oil is bad on cats!)....

Let's see...I will post results

Remember that the later style cam is NOT compatible with the rockers. You will need to replace everything as a set.

Without getting into a typical oil discussion -- use diesel-grade such as Rotella-T 15-40 to avoid future wear.

I read some where on that engine the fix is to drill oil holes on the oil rail larger.Ford Pinto's had this problem too.

Last time I smogged this car I was near limits and was told car would probably fail next time...After cam, rockers, and valve seal kit installed... numbers were equal to new car! I think it was the seals that did the trick...

Just saying...

You're right about the feel of the car when it's running great.
It's priceless.
